Fosen Yard builds environmentally friendly container ships for Veer

The shipping company Veer has commissioned Fosen Yard in Stralsund to build two new container ships. They are to be powered by environmentally friendly hydrogen and sails. Delivery is planned for 2027.

“We are delighted that Veer has commissioned us to build the first environmentally friendly container ship in Germany,” said Carsten Stellamanns, Managing Director of Fosen Yard GmbH. “Together with Veer, we will develop and launch a groundbreaking concept.”

The shipyard is a subsidiary of the Norwegian Fosen Yard, founded in 2022, and is located on the Volkswerft Stralsund site.

The published designs indicate that the ships will be 100 metres long. For environmentally friendly operation, Veer combines “an innovative hull form, DynaRig sails and hydrogen fuel cells. With wind power alone, the freighters will be able to reach speeds of up to 18 knots and a range of 10,400 nm. With engine power, 11 knots and a range of 1,200 nm are possible.
