Anyone who needs quick help or support on board can now find the right contact in the new “Seafarers Helpline 24/7” flyer.
This has been published by the Diversity Project Group of WISTA Germany and the Women at Sea Association. The compact information flyer provides seafarers worldwide with an overview of the most important international emergency call and advice centers – available around the clock, free of charge and confidential.
The aim of the initiative is to provide all people on board – regardless of nationality or gender – with quick access to psychological, social and practical support. The list includes renowned contact points such as ISWAN SeafarerHelp, Sailors’ Society, Deutsche Seemannsmission, ITF, Safer Waves and the Frauen zur See e.V. association.
Targeted support for female seafarers
A special note in the flyer is aimed at female seafarers who are affected by sexualized violence, discrimination or harassment. Targeted support and advice is available for them, including from the association Frauen zur See e.V. and the organization Safer Waves.
“With this flyer, we are closing an important gap in the provision of information on board,” says Franziska Eckhoff, 2nd Chairwoman of WISTA Germany. “We want to show all seafarers: You are not alone.”
Sarah Zimmerer from the association Frauen zur See e.V. adds: “There can be unpleasant incidents on board. We often find that women need encouragement to officially complain about the perpetrators. They tell themselves that this is just the way it is at sea and are afraid of damaging their careers. But our experience has shown that things can change for the better in the long term if we actively demand our rights. Have the courage to stand up for yourself and other women! For real equality at sea!”
