The “Star Princess” has been delivered to Princess Cruises after a slight delay. It offers space for over 4,000 passengers.
With the “Star Princess”, the Italian shipbuilding company Fincantieri has delivered the second ship in the Sphere class to Princess Cruises. Together with its sister ship “Sun Pricess”, the cruise giant is the largest ship ever built in Italy: it is 345 m long and 47 m wide, with 178,000 GT and space for 4,300 passengers. The “Star Princess” is equipped with a dual-fuel propulsion system and is primarily powered by LNG. The ship was handed over to Princess Cruises in a festive ceremony in Monfalcone on Friday.
“The ‘Star Princess’ is a symbol of our ability to shape the future of the cruise industry, combining tradition and innovation,” said Fincantieri CEO Pierroberto Folgiero. “With this ship, we are underlining Fincantieri’s leadership in building sustainable, high-tech, next-generation ships that strengthen the competitiveness of the Italian industry worldwide. The shipyard in Monfalcone, a true global benchmark, represents the pinnacle of our expertise and know-how: here we are building ships that will carry Italy’s name around the world and consolidate our country’s role as a global leader in shipbuilding.”
In February, Fincantieri delivered the “Sun Princess” with a slight delay. The shipyard has built more than 40 ships since 1990 and, according to its own information, “further record-breaking ships” are to follow in the coming years. The company is one of the largest employers in Monfalcone, with the supply chain creating around 23,000 jobs.
The American cruise brand Princess Cruises, part of the Carnival Corporation, currently operates a fleet of 17 ships that sail to 330 destinations worldwide.
