The Taiwan-based shipping company Interasia has announced an order with Chinese shipyard Jiangsu YangZiJiang Shipbuilding (YZJ).
Six 2,900 TEU newbuildings have been ordered. The carrier company and shipyard have also agreed an option for two further units. This is the first cooperation between Interasia and YZJ in the shipbuilding sector.
The shipping company described the move as an “important milestone in the company’s fleet expansion strategy”. It clearly reflects Interasia’s ambition to strengthen its position in the intra-Asian market and beyond.
The carrier currently operates a fleet of 25 vessels with a total of 74,000 TEU. This includes four charter vessels. Nine freighters with a total of almost 43,000 TEU are already in the order book, according to data from the industry service Alphaliner.
The newbuilds that have now been contracted are due to be delivered from 2028. They should then be integrated into the existing services in intra-Asian traffic.
Interasia was founded in Tokyo in 1967, making it one of the oldest container shipping companies in the region. Initially, the network mainly comprised services between Japan and Singapore/Malaysia. Over the years, it has expanded to other regions, including China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, India, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Myanmar and Korea.
