The Northern European shipping group ESL has taken delivery of the “Ventumar”, the eighth hybrid newbuild in a 12-series from the shipyard. The series should be complete by fall 2026.
AtoB@C Shipping, a subsidiary of Finnish ESL Shipping, has taken delivery of “Ventumar” in India. It is the eighth ship in its series of twelve plug-in hybrid coasters, according to the shipping company – originally founded as a joint venture between the Leer-based shipping group Briese and Swedish businessman Anders Nilsson, and now part of the shipping company ESL and the Finnish conglomerate Aspo.
According to the shipping company, the Green Coaster series represents “major progress in the field of energy-efficient shipping”. Each of the 5,400-dwt vessels is equipped with battery technology and shore power solutions, which should enable emission-free and quiet port operations. The ninth ship in the series, the “Fleximar”, was launched at the beginning of September. The ships are being built in India by the Chowgule shipyard. A newbuild series of 17,000 tdw MPP ships is also already in the works.
The combined fleet of ESL Shipping and AtoB@C Shipping consists of around 40 vessels with a capacity of 4,000 to 25,000 tdw. In recent years, ESL has taken various steps to modernize its fleet, including sales, newbuilding orders and activities on the capital market. The sales and additional fresh money from the capital market were intended to create free capacity for “green” ships. ESL had also confirmed an equity injection of €45 million and relied on pooling as a financing instrument.
