Drydocks World, part of the DP World Group, has been awarded an EPC contract by Amigo LNG for the construction of the world’s largest floating LNG liquefaction (FLNG) facility.
The project includes the conversion of two LNG carriers into Floating Storage Units (FSU) and the construction of two FLNG barges at the shipyard in Dubai. The facility is expected to be stationed off Guaymas in Mexico from the second half of 2028 and will produce more than 4.2 million tons of LNG per year. This will surpass all previous floating LNG projects.
Amigo LNG is a joint venture between the Texan company Epcilon LNG and the Singapore-based LNG Alliance. The supply comes from the US Permian Basin. The location on Mexico’s west coast shortens transportation routes to Asia compared to US Gulf terminals, which should reduce costs and emissions.
“This contract is a milestone for Drydocks World and for Dubai,” explained CEO Rado Antolovic. The project underlines the shipyard’s expertise in offshore conversions and large newbuilds.
The project will be implemented in a modular design to enable production, integration and pre-testing in a controlled environment. Drydocks World has experience from more than ten LNG and FSRU conversions. The company operates the largest shipyard in the Persian Gulf, specializing in the construction, repair and conversion of vessels, offshore platforms and special projects for the energy sector using innovative technology.
Drydocks World operates its shipyard southeast of the Port Rashid harbor in Dubai and employs over 3,500 people, many of them from South Asia. The company was built according to initial plans dating back to 1971 and commenced shipyard operations in 1983.
