Donal Trump’s next move: the USA wants to impose tariffs of 25% on all steel and aluminum imports from abroad.
The tariffs are to affect all countries, including neighboring Canada and Mexico, for which import duties were recently suspended. The US President also wants to impose reciprocal tariffs as part of his protectionist campaign. These will apply to all goods from all countries that impose tariffs on US goods.
Germany and other EU countries would be hit hard by tariffs on steel and aluminum products. According to the German Steel Federation, it would affect 70% of all German exports. Germany is the fifth largest supplier of steel to the USA with 2.6 million tons of rolled steel, among other things.
Trump had already imposed US tariffs of 25% on steel and 10% on aluminum during his first term in office. However, he later granted duty-free quotas to several trading partners, including countries in the European Union, the UK, Canada and Mexico.
