The Norwegian-German classification society expects greater newbuilding activity for bulkers and tankers and is setting up its own team in China for this purpose.
DNV has established a team of experts for tankers and bulkers based in Shanghai. “In view of the strong global demand and the planned fleet renewal, we are well prepared to support customers in these key segments,” it said in a statement.
In the tanker segment, the strong demand for oil and oil products and changing trade patterns have led to an increase in demand for tankers. In the bulk carrier segment, fleet renewal, modernisation and a focus on decarbonization and cyber security are driving investment in new vessels.
DNV establishes team of 11 experts
To support the industry in this critical phase, DNV has established a dedicated team of tanker and bulk carrier experts in China. The team, which is based at DNV’s Shanghai office, consists of 11 professionals, including ship type experts and senior approval engineers, “covering the full spectrum of maritime disciplines”. The team will be linked to DNV’s global network of tanker and bulker expert teams in Oslo and Busan.
In 2023, Chinese shipyards reportedly accounted for almost 60% of all newbuilding orders, of which over 70% were for bulkers and tankers.
“Our customers are facing a critical decade and an uncertain regulatory and commercial environment. The pace of change is accelerating, with new technology and fuel challenges, regulations and commercial pressures already in place or on the horizon. With the establishment of the tanker and bulker expert team in Shanghai, we can be even more responsive to our customers while providing an unmatched level of technical support and expertise,” said Norbert Kray, DNV’s Regional Manager for Greater China.
