Is there finally some movement in the planning for the future ferry service to the Channel Island of Jersey? The shipping company DFDS has taken an important step.
The Danish company has now announced that it has been appointed as the “preferred bidder” for the 15-year contract, which has been unclear for some time.
The new ferry service to Jersey on the Channel Islands for freight and passenger traffic is scheduled to start on 28 March 2025. “We are delighted to have been selected as the preferred bidder for the Jersey ferry service. This opportunity allows us to bring our commitment to safety, reliability and exceptional customer service to the benefit of both Jersey residents and visitors. We know that a reliable ferry service is vital for Jersey, for the economy and for the supply of essential goods and access to healthcare, and we look forward to serving the communities of Jersey for many years to come,” said Filip Hermann, VP BU Channel & Baltics.
The move strengthens DFDS‘ position “as a leading ferry operator in and around Europe” and expands its presence in the English Channel, where it already operates two routes between Dover, Calais and Dunkirk, as well as a route between Newhaven and Dieppe.
Full details of DFDS’ plans for the services, timetable and vessels are expected to be announced in the next two weeks. As part of the planning process, the company intends to work with local authorities, business associations, ports and communities in Jersey to optimise the service and provide a comfortable and efficient travel experience.
The future of the route has been unclear for some time. Brittany Ferries/Condor Ferries had already been selected as preferred bidders by the Guernsey authorities. Ultimately, however, no final decision was made, partly due to the age of the fleet and financial difficulties at Condor.
It was also unclear whether there should be a service across several islands or just for Jersey – some observers believe that the latter option is much less commercially attractive.
