“Deutschland” ends shipyard time at Bredo Dry Docks

The 175 m cruise ship arrived at Bredo Dry Docks around two weeks ago as the “World Odyssey”. It has now left the shipyard again under the charter name “Deutschland”.

The cruise ship had moored in the fishing port of Bremerhaven for scheduled maintenance and class work at Bredo.

On Sunday afternoon, “Deutschland” picked up the first 503 guests at Columbuskaje for the summer season now underway for the German tour operator Phoenix Reisen. The current voyage will take the ship from Bremerhaven around the British Isles within 12 days, with the return to the seaside city, the summer base port for all Phoenix ships, scheduled for 17 May. The former TV dream ship will then embark on eight more voyages from here until September.

Class review at Bredo

Twice a year, the cruise ship built in Kiel in 1998 for the Deilmann shipping company not only changes its name and funnel logo, but also parts of the furnishings such as bed linen, bathrobes, crockery and glasses are replaced at Columbuskaje and stored at Hoyer. This was also the case this time, after completion of the six-month assignment for the US study organisation Semester at Seas, which once again travelled half the world with the ship under the name “World Odyssey” and around 600 students. In the past, the name change took place directly at the Columbus Quay; due to this year’s planned shipyard time at the Bredo shipyard, the name change took place in the shipyard’s floating dock.

During the cruise ship’s routine shipyard visit, which is operated year-round by the Bernard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM) shipping company, necessary maintenance and renovation work was carried out on board. The classification society also checked numerous safety-related systems on board, which is necessary every five years.

Following completion of the shipyard work, the cruise ship, now renamed “Deutschland” again, left the floating dock last Thursday with a completely new white hull paint job and first moored at the Labrador pier, where provisions were taken on board for the upcoming cruises for charterer Phoenix Reisen. On Saturday evening, the ship moved from the fishing port to Columbuskaje.

After the Peter Deilmann shipping company had to file for insolvency for the well-known television ship at the end of 2014, the owner changed to the Greek company Delos Cruise, and Phoenix chartered the cruise ship for the summer months at least until 2025, with an option to extend. In the winter months, the ship will continue to sail for Semester at Sea. The next voyage departs from Ijmuiden in the Netherlands on 9 September. (CE)
