Deugro supplies heavy-duty units for CO2 plant

Project logistics specialist Deugro has completed the delivery of key units for a new CO2 plant at a cement works in Bavaria.

The first large plant of its kind in Germany is due to go into operation this year. The project comprised four tanks, which had to be delivered from Turkey, and a 180-ton heat exchanger.

The construction is a carbon capture and utilization (CCU) plant. It will be installed in a cement plant in Triefenstein-Lengfurt, Bavaria, where the company Heidelberg Materials is based. It is expected to achieve a capture capacity of 70,000 tons of CO2 per year.

Deugro Hanau has been awarded the contract to supply the units by Linde Engineering, which is responsible for the construction. In detail, these are four storage tanks, each weighing 75 tons (30.45 m x 4.80 m x 4.80 m), which were delivered by truck, coaster and barge from Turkey via Belgium. The order also included a 180-ton heat exchanger (13.50 m x 5.35 m x 5.50 m) from Haren an der Ems, which was transported to the construction site on the River Main by barge.

The biggest challenge was the final stage: The 2 km from the inland port in Lengfurt to the construction site includes mountainous sections with considerable inclines as well as narrow sections through a village with sharp 90-degree bends.

The tanks, each over 30 m long, were picked up from Kayseri in Turkey on special low-loaders and initially delivered to the port of Iskenderun. There they were loaded onto a coaster using coastal cranes and transported on to Antwerp in Belgium. There, Deugro loaded the tanks onto barges and took them to a private berth in Lengfurt am Main. From there, they were unloaded directly onto truck-trailer configurations. These consist of 16-axle modular trailers with an additional loading area extension corresponding to the length of the load, which is carried by a large mobile crane organized by the Deugro team.

Last stage is completed at night

Due to local regulations for the overland transportation of oversized and heavy loads (OSHL), the 2 km onward journey to the construction site could only take place after 10 p.m. and required numerous preparations. These included the erection of no parking signs as well as police and private escort vehicles to close the route during the transport.

The 180-ton heat exchanger was collected from the pier and loaded onto a barge at the supplier’s premises in Haren/Ems before being shipped to the private jetty in Lengfurt. On arrival, it was unloaded by two mobile cranes in tandem onto a semi-trailer system consisting of 16-axle modular trailers. The on-carriage took place at night and the delivery to the construction site followed the same route as the tanks. A second tractor unit was used for the onward journey to support the uphill delivery route. Despite all these challenges, the total of five units were delivered “just in time” and in the correct order.

“Thanks to the excellent and professional cooperation with the customer and all partners, all components arrived safely and on time at the construction site,” said Florian Lumperda, Project Manager Operations at Deugro Germany. “We are delighted to be able to contribute to this exciting project with our logistics services and thus make the separated carbon from cement production usable as a valuable raw material for other industrial applications.”
