Denmark outstrips Germany with its fleet

Denmark has moved up to 9th place in the list of the world’s largest maritime nations, overtaking Germany.

According to the report, the Scandinavian neighbour has increased both in terms of tonnage operated and the number of ships flying the Danish flag.

“Especially in geopolitically turbulent times like these, it is strategically important for Denmark – and for Europe – to have significant transport capacity in the form of a strong merchant fleet sailing under the Danish flag,” says Anne H. Steffensen, CEO of Danish Shipping.

Since the last report in June 2024, the total capacity of the fleet has increased by 2.2 million GT to 60.5 million GT. The number of ships flying the Danish flag has risen slightly to 740 vessels. The fleet controlled by German shipowners, regardless of flag, is now reported at 58.8 million GT. This is 10th place in the ranking of the world’s largest seafaring nations.

Greece (197.2 million GT) remains the leader, ahead of China (166.9 million GT) and Singapore (146.2 million GT). Denmark and Germany are followed by Japan, Hong Kong, Switzerland, South Korea and the USA.
