A new consortium between Karstensens Skibsværft A/S, Hvide Sande Shipyard and OSK Design is ready to deliver naval support vessels.
These could be delivered as early as 2027 if politicians decide to do so quickly, according to reports. The hulls could be built at the Karstensen shipyard in Poland, which currently mainly produces hulls for fishing trawlers up to 90 meters long. The ships will later be fitted out at the shipyards in Skagen and Hvide Sande.
The naval support vessels would be able to play a central role in monitoring and protecting the Danish marine environment and critical infrastructure. The Baltic Sea had come into focus not least due to acts of sabotage on underwater cables and pipelines as well as increased Russian espionage activities.
“The ships are not designed as combat vessels, but will be able to act as mother ships for drones, for example, and will be equipped with a remote-controlled heavy machine gun,” the consortium wrote in a press release.
By choosing our consortium, the Danish armed forces will ensure that construction capacity is available in good time, the consortium advertises. The three companies are also reportedly ready to take on other design and construction tasks for the armed forces, e.g. Arctic vessels for the east coast of Greenland and icebreakers as well as coastal corvettes/coastal intervention units.
“We are ready to contribute together with other Danish armed forces, both shipyards and subcontractors in the maritime sector, so we are starting to build ships for the Danish Navy.” (CE)
