CRIST launches Bernhard Schulte’s new building

The Polish CRIST shipyard based in Gdynia has completed another partially equipped hull.

This is a new offshore vessel that is being built on behalf of Ulstein Verft for Bernhard Schulte Offshore.

In February last year, the cutting of the steel plates for the construction of the hull of the “Commissioning Service Operation Vessel” (CSOV) began at the CRIST shipyard in Gdynia. After a year of work, the finished hull with the construction number NB321 left the shipyard last Friday. The vessel is being built for the German company Bernhard Schulte Offshore, which has commissioned the construction of a series of such units from the Ulstein Verft. Crist has been a partner of Ulstein for many years.

The hull built in Gdynia is 90m long and 19m wide. The ship will be equipped with a centrally positioned, motion-compensated gangway and a crane with a lifting capacity of up to 5 tons. There are individual cabins for 110 people on board, and the ship can accommodate a total of 132 people.

Offshore vessel is designed for methanol operation

The unit is based on the SX222 platform, which was designed by Ulstein Design & Solutions AS, but adapted to the needs of the shipowner. It features Ulstein’s patented Twin X-star system – the propulsion units are mounted at both the stern and bow of the vessel. This allows vessels equipped with this technology to navigate between wind turbines without having to turn, regardless of wave and wind direction. The ship has a hybrid battery drive and is designed to run on methanol fuel, which reduces emissions. According to the shipyard, its “unique design and technical solutions make it an efficient and environmentally friendly vessel for offshore wind farm operations”.

“Thanks to the unique Twin X-star design, the unit has improved seaworthiness and is more environmentally friendly due to its hybrid propulsion,” explains Marek Lewczuk, Project Manager at CRIST S.A.

CRIST builds several vessels for Ulstein

The hull towed out of the shipyard quay by the tugs “Anteos” and “Fairplay-71” is the second construction of this type to be built at the CRIST shipyard for this client and the fourth unit in this series to be built on behalf of Ulstein Verft. The first vessel to be built for Bernhard Schulte Offshore is currently being completed at the Ulstein Verft in Ulsteinvik, Norway. Work on it is nearing completion – it was officially launched last week.

“This unit is the result of our long-standing collaboration with Ulstein Verft. We are currently building other sister ships for Ulstein – two of the same type and a cable-laying vessel. All three units will be delivered this year,” adds Marek Lewczuk.
