Cosco launches sea freight product with biofuel

Several liner shipping companies already give shippers the option of booking sea freight with a reduced carbon footprint. Cosco is now also taking this step.

The Chinese shipping company Cosco Shipping Lines has now also introduced a “sustainable shipping product” called Hi Eco. The first green certificate for green maritime transportation has now been presented to the customer Volvo. [ds_preview]

Like other liner shipping companies with “eco sea freight products” such as Hapag-Lloyd, the shipping company relies on the use of biofuel to operate its container ships. Cosco did not make the exact details of the product public, but biofuel from waste is usually used in the fleet and then allocated to and certified for the individual transports for which the option was booked.

“Cosco Shipping Lines has always been committed to helping customers reduce greenhouse gas emissions and make a positive contribution to sustainable development. Hi ECO, an eco-friendly shipping product that uses green biofuels, provides an ideal solution for customers who can easily reduce the carbon footprint of their transportation by reducing CO2 emissions throughout the lifecycle of Well To Wake. Through this additional service, customers can reserve climate-friendly freight to meet their green transportation needs,” the shipping company said.

The Swedish car manufacturer Volvo is the first customer to enter into an agreement with Cosco for environmentally friendly transportation services. The shipping company will handle intercontinental freight transportation for Volvo via its “Hi Eco Green Service” products.

In the summer of this year, the Swedish car manufacturer had already concluded a cooperation agreement with the logistics company DB Schenker for sea freight with reduced emissions for transportation between Europe and North America.
