Cosco and MAN expand cooperation for retrofits

At a recent ceremony in China, MAN Energy Solutions signed a framework agreement with Cosco Shipping Heavy Industry (CHI) for future cooperation on retrofit projects for decarbonization.

Michael Petersen, Senior Vice President, Head of Primeserv Denmark, signed the agreement on behalf of MAN Energy Solutions, while Guo Zhiqiang, Deputy General Manager at CHI Commercial Headquarters, signed on behalf of CHI.

“I am pleased to announce that CHI and MAN Energy Solutions, who have common customers in their respective fields, will now enter into closer cooperation in the decarbonization of ships,” said Guo Zhiqiang. “From today, our integrated one-stop solutions will give new impetus to the green transition of the global maritime industry.”

Petersen said: “This framework agreement facilitates MAN Energy Solutions’ partnership with CHI, one of the largest repair yard groups in the world. The agreement means that we can join forces on many future projects to ensure the decarbonization of the existing merchant fleet worldwide.”

Retrofit possible for around 4,500 ships worldwide

There are currently around 4,500 ships worldwide that could benefit from switching their current bunker fuel to more environmentally friendly options. “We look forward to working with CHI to offer new decarbonization solutions to the maritime industry,” said Petersen.

The new framework agreement provides for the conversion of existing ships to run on new alternative fuels such as methane, methanol and ammonia – all fuels that can be produced sustainably through Power-to-X processes. MAN Energy Solutions says it will provide advanced engine retrofit technologies and digital energy efficiency solutions, while Cosco Heavy Industries will contribute its extensive EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) experience to major ship conversion projects.

CHI has capacity for 1,500 ships per year

With five ship repair yards, CHI has the capacity to repair and convert approximately 1,500 vessels annually. This collaboration will combine MAN PrimeServ’s state-of-the-art dual-fuel engine technology with CHI’s repair and conversion capabilities to decarbonize the world’s merchant fleet.

For MAN Energy Solutions, the new agreement is a natural progression resulting from the close relationship between the two companies. The two companies are already working together on two major projects for two of the world’s leading container ship owners.
