The container ship “Maersk Sana” (8,450 TEU) is drifting in the Atlantic off the US east coast near Bermuda after suffering engine damage and is unable to maneuver.
According to reports from claims service providers, the 2004-built freighter, which is owned by the Singapore-based Maersk company Moller Singapore AP, suffered an explosion in the engine room on April 28 after departing from New York.
Three members of the crew were reported to have suffered serious burns in the accident. Maersk headquarters in Copenhagen said that all necessary medical assistance for the crew had been secured. The ship is currently in emergency power mode and is adrift. Solutions for salvaging and refloating the ship are being worked on.
The “Maersk Sana” operates a liner service between the Far East and the US East Coast via the Panama Canal for Gemini partners Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd. At the time of the accident, the freighter, which is insured for third-party liability with P&I Club Skuld, was reportedly on its return voyage to Singapore.
