Four Color Line ro-pax ships get Wärtsilä hybrid scrubbers

Wärtsilä is to modernise the exhaust gas cleaning system on board four ships of the Norwegian shipping company Color Line.

To this end, the technology group will add closed-loop functionality to the ships’ current open-loop scrubbers. As the drive for energy efficiency and emissions reduction in shipping becomes increasingly urgent, shipowners and operators like Color Line are looking for solutions to optimise ship performance and achieve sustainability goals. Upgrading to a hybrid scrubber system on board these vessels allows Color Line to control the exhaust gas cleaning through the scrubber’s wash water and ensures that the vessels comply with strict regulations.

“This scrubber upgrade supports our focus on minimising the environmental impact of our operations. Switching to the Wärtsilä system not only ensures that we continue to comply with existing rules and regulations, but also future-proofs our vessels,” says Per Erik Olsen, EVP Color Line Marine.

Wärtsilä’s hybrid scrubbers are equipped with the latest exhaust gas cleaning technology, minimising sulphur oxide (SOx) emissions and enabling the vessel to comply with emission control regulations around the world. The solution, which can operate in both open and closed loop with seawater for SOx cleaning from the exhaust gases, removes 98% of SOx emissions. It also significantly reduces nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particulate emissions.

“Through a modular approach, continuous research and development, and prioritising innovation, we are fully committed to developing exhaust gas treatment solutions that help the industry achieve its emission reduction targets,” comments Kashif Javaid, Director of Sales, Exhaust Treatment, Wärtsilä Marine. “We have worked closely with Color Line in the past and look forward to continuing to help them operate their facilities safely, efficiently and sustainably.”

The retrofit will be carried out on two large ro-pax and two high-speed ro-pax vessels operating between Norway and Denmark and Norway and Germany, and is scheduled to start at the end of 2024.
