The shipping company CMA CGM is expanding its logistics network in the Mediterranean with a joint venture in the Slovenian port of Koper.
The French CMA CGM Group will be working together with the Slovenian port of Koper in a joint venture in future. The focus will be on vehicle transportation to and from Asia.
On Monday, CEO Rodolphe Saadé met with Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob and French President Emmanuel Macron in Koper to discuss a future partnership. The aim is to further develop the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) by strengthening Koper.
As part of the joint venture, a terminal for automotive logistics will be built on a 27,000 m2 area in the port of Koper. CMA CGM has been represented in Slovenia for over 20 years and employs more than 100 people locally. The shipping company operates two services via Koper: the Phoenician Express, which connects Asia with the Mediterranean, and the Bora Med service within the Mediterranean region.
The joint venture aims to utilize the intermodal connection between sea and rail on the one hand and to establish a partnership with car manufacturers on the other in order to strengthen the competitiveness of the port of Koper. The possibilities of joint projects and the development of regional trade flows will also be explored.
CMA CGM’s services from Koper are operated with LNG or methanol-powered vessels with a capacity of 15,000 TEU and are complemented by rail connections to the most important Central European markets.
Throughput at Koper has grown significantly in recent years. This is due not least to the presence of the Lidl shipping company Tailwind, which uses the port as an important hub for its services.
