CMA CGM expands into British rail freight

The French shipping company CMA CGM is further diversifying its portfolio: with the takeover of Freightliner UK Intermodal Logistics, it is entering the British rail transport sector.

CMA CGM, which is active in various logistics markets worldwide, has taken a further step towards expanding its transportation services in Europe with the acquisition of Freightliner. According to a press release, the takeover includes rail and road transportation, inland terminals and the Freightliner brand. The British company was already a long-standing partner of CMA CGM; the takeover now confirms its commitment to the modal shift from road to rail, according to the statement.

Subject to all regulatory approvals, the transaction is expected to be completed in early 2026. The Heavy Haul, Rotterdam Rail Feeding and Freightliner Poland/Germany divisions are not affected by the takeover and will remain under existing ownership.

“The acquisition of Freightliner, a leading rail freight operator, strengthens our intermodal presence in the UK, a strategic market for CMA CGM,” said Chairman and CEO Rodolphe Saadé. “It will allow us to combine sea, rail and road transportation more efficiently and thus offer better solutions to our customers. It is also a concrete step towards expanding lower-carbon transport options, supporting both their needs and the decarbonization of global trade.”

Commenting on the sale, Tim Shoveller, Chief Executive Officer of the Freightliner Group, said: “This transaction marks an exciting new chapter for Intermodal and Heavy Haul. Both companies can now focus on their respective markets under separate ownership. The Intermodal business will become a stand-alone company within the CMA CGM portfolio and will have the opportunity to collaborate with other independent CMA CGM companies. Heavy Haul will continue its growth trajectory in the dry bulk sector under a new brand, with a clear focus on strengthening its position as a major carrier. Our customers will continue to benefit from the same highly skilled leadership and operational teams, and we have solid plans for a smooth transition of ownership.”

CMA CGM has a presence in the UK with almost 7,200 employees in the maritime, logistics and inland waterway sectors. The Group’s shipping line employs 286 people and operates 28 services connecting the UK with the rest of the world. In 2024, CMA CGM transported 802,000 TEU to and from the UK.
