Chinese present jumbo container ship at SMM

The design for a jumbo container ship of unprecedented dimensions was presented at SMM. The capacity is 27,500 TEU.

The current size record is 24,346 TEU, held by a series of Megamax freighters for the industry leader MSC. The design presented at SMM by the Chinese design office Sdari and the state-owned shipyard group CSSC now provides for an increase of more than 3,100 TEU (+13%).

The “Green Sealion 27,500” already has an Approval in Principle (AiP) from the classification society DNV. The mega-freighter will have a dual-fuel propulsion system and use LNG as its fuel base.

An optimised hull design is intended to increase fuel efficiency. On land, the ship will be supplied with shore power and can be operated emission-free.

CSSC also presented other ship designs. The “Green Sealion 20,000” is designed for dual-fuel propulsion using ammonia, while the “Green Sealion 16000” is somewhat smaller and has a wider hull.
