Celebrity orders sixth cruise ship in the Edge class

Celebrity Cruises, a subsidiary of the American cruise company Royal Caribbean Group, has ordered another cruise ship in the Edge class.

It will be built at the French shipyard Chantiers de l’Atlantique in St. Nazaire and is scheduled for delivery in 2028.

It will be a sister ship to the current “Celebrity Xcel”, which will be delivered this fall. Other ships in this Edge class are the 327-metre-long and 39-metre-wide ships “Celebrity Ascent”, “Celebrity Beyond”, “Celebrity Apex”, and “Celebrity Edge”.

All ships are equipped with the so-called Magic Carpet on the starboard side of the ship. This “floating carpet” extends over the railing and can be used as a bar high above the sea, as a restaurant, as a tender platform on the water surface or on deck 16 as an extension of the pool deck, depending on requirements.

“Celebrity’s Edge class has redefined premium ocean travel, combining groundbreaking design with unforgettable guest experiences. Each ship in this award-winning series has set a new standard for the industry, and ‘Celebrity Xcel’, sailing later this year, is no exception,” said Jason Liberty, President and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group. “Partnering with Chantiers de l’Atlantique to expand the Edge series with the ‘Edge 6’ is another milestone in our mission to responsibly create the world’s best vacations.”

“Celebrity Xcel” launches in November

“Celebrity Xcel will be the feel-good destination for vacationers around the world when it launches in November, and we are thrilled to make this commitment to bring her a sister ship with ‘Edge 6,'” said Laura Hodges Bethge, President of Celebrity Cruises. “Celebrity Xcel will combine the best of the Edge Series ships with seven new experiences, all perfected with the help of our recently announced Xcel Dream Makers – an industry-first program that leverages cruise guests’ power of choice in culinary, interior design and entertainment.”

From November 2025, the 3,248-passenger cruise ship “Celebrity Xcel” will cruise the Caribbean and become a driver of innovation, as it will be the first cruise ship in the Royal Caribbean Group to be powered by methanol. It can be assumed that the 6th newbuild in this ship class, which has now been ordered, will also be able to use this fuel. (CE)
