Canadian icebreaker with Finnish expertise

Seaspan awards a major contract to Elomatic for the construction of the Canadian Coast Guard’s new Polar Icebreaker. The Finnish company will provide engineering and design services.

The Canadian Coast Guard is to receive a new polar icebreaker. As part of the North American country’s National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS), it is to be built entirely in Canada.

However, the Finnish company Elomatic will be responsible for the development and construction of the new vessel. The Finns received the order via their Canadian site in Vancouver.

The client is Seaspan Vancouver Shipyards (Seaspan). Elomatic Consulting’s task is now to provide design and development services for the construction of the new polar icebreaker.

Under the contract, Elomatic says it will provide design support for the construction and ensure that the polar icebreaker is optimally designed for production at Vancouver Shipyard and meets all the demanding requirements of the Canadian Coast Guard for use in Arctic waters.

Icebreaker designed for year-round use in the Arctic

The polar icebreaker is being designed and built entirely in Canada as part of the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS). With a length of around 158 m and a width of 28 m, the ship will have more than 40 MW of installed power. Facilities include specialized laboratories, a moon pool, a helicopter deck with hangar and facilities for unmanned aerial systems. Once completed, the ship will be one of the most powerful Polar Class 2 icebreakers in the world and will be able to operate in the Arctic all year round.

Eleomatic expands office in Vancouver

Since joining the project in 2021, Elomatic has significantly expanded its Vancouver office to meet the growing demands of the Polar Icebreaker program. The company has strengthened its local team by recruiting and training Canadian professionals, and has also sent experienced specialists from Europe to Vancouver – many of them for long-term assignments. This targeted growth ensures that the construction phase is primarily driven by local experts who combine international expertise with a strong Canadian presence.

Elomatic is committed to meeting the 100% Canadian Content Value (CCV) targets by growing its Canadian workforce to nearly 40 employees and investing in Canadian universities and small and medium-sized enterprises. In doing so, the company is combining local strengths with international excellence.
