Germany has been awarded the contract for three new project areas in another offshore wind auction. RWE is participating twice in a joint venture.
The auction was for three sites in the North Sea with a planned total capacity of 5.5 GW, which had been pre-inspected by the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH).
The requirements for the tender included financing modalities, a decarbonisation approach to offshore expansion and the use of environmentally friendly foundation technologies.
A total of five bids were reportedly submitted for the three areas, one for area N-9.1 and two each for areas N-9.2 and N-9.3.
Electricity to flow from the first offshore park from 2030
The contracts for areas N-9.1 and N-9.2 were awarded to joint ventures between the energy supplier RWE and the French energy giant TotalEnergies. Area N-9.3 is being developed by Waterekke Energy, which is associated with the asset manager Luxcara.
Commissioning of the N-9.1 wind farm is planned for 2030, while the N-9.3 and N-9.2 wind farms are expected to be operational in 2029 and 2031 respectively. The next step will be a planning approval procedure for the construction and operation of wind turbines and the application for grid connection.
According to the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency, the proceeds from the offshore tenders will primarily be used to reduce electricity costs and, to a lesser extent, to protect the marine environment and promote environmentally friendly fishing.
