Maersk Tankers has commissioned Bound4blue to retrofit five tankers with a total of 20 sails. They are to be installed in 2025 and 2026 and will be able to reduce the ships’ emissions by a double-digit percentage in each case.
Bound4blue will install the 26-metre-long “eSails” on board the medium-range tankers “Maersk Tacoma”, “Maersk Tampa”, “Maersk Tangier”, “Maersk Teesport” and “Maersk Tokyo”. It is the largest order to date for the Spanish company, which specialises in reducing emissions using Wind Assisted Propulsion Systems (WAPS).
José Miguel Bermúdez, CEO and co-founder of Bound4blue, described the retrofit order as an “important milestone” and added: “The trust that Maersk Tankers has placed in our technology underlines the proven capabilities of our solution to reduce fuel consumption and emissions while helping to comply with CII and FuelEU regulations. Our system is designed to operate safely in challenging conditions and is particularly well suited to the safe, high-performance and cost-effective operation of tankers.” They look forward to working with Maersk Tankers and accelerating the decarbonisation of the industry.
Bound4blue strengthens presence in the market
According to the company, Maersk Tankers selected the “eSails” together with its strategic partner Njord after a thorough evaluation. The autonomous suction sails draw air over an aerodynamic surface. In this way, they generate additional propulsion through wind power and reduce fuel consumption, operating costs and emissions.
For Bound4blue, the contract with Maersk Tankers is a highlight after a successful year. The company has recently secured orders from Klaveness Combination Carriers, Amasus and Louis Dreyfus, for example.
