“Borkum Riffgrund 3” produces first electricity

The “Borkum Riffgrund 3” offshore wind farm has been feeding electricity into the grid since this week. Once fully commissioned, the North Sea wind farm is expected to produce around 913 MW of power.

The offshore wind farm “Borkum Riffgrund 3” was realized by the Danish energy company Ørsted and the German financial investor Nuveen Infrastructure.

The offshore wind farm is located around 72 km off the German North Sea coast and covers an area of around 75 km². A total of 83 wind turbines with an output of 11 MW each were installed.

“Borkum Riffgrund 3” is the first offshore wind farm that Ørsted has built in Germany without an offshore substation (OSS). The new connection concept connects the wind turbines directly via a 66 kV system to the offshore converter platform “DolWin epsilon”, which is installed and operated by the German transmission system operator TenneT.

Ørsted has concluded contracts with its first customers

Several long-term Corporate Power Purchase Agreements (CPPAs) have already been concluded for the electricity produced by “Borkum Riffgrund 3”. According to Ørsted, the company has concluded power purchase agreements for a total of 786 MW with industrial and technology customers. The first customers include Amazon (350 MW), BASF (186 MW), Covestro (100 MW), Energie-Handels-Gesellschaft/REWE Group (100 MW) and Google (50 MW). According to Ørsted, the contract terms are between ten and 25 years. The agreements would thus create long-term price security for both the project developer and the customers, it is said.

The project, which involved several European suppliers – with wind turbines and foundations from Germany and Denmark, cables from Germany and France and installation vessels from the Netherlands and Belgium – is scheduled to be fully commissioned in the first quarter of 2026.
