The German Navy’s task force provider “Bonn” has arrived at German Naval Yards in Kiel.
The shipyard will carry out extensive repair work. The “Bonn” was towed into the 38,000 m2 dry dock on July 1 to undergo scheduled maintenance and repair work. In addition, measures are also scheduled to maintain the ship’s operational readiness.
Extensive work on the EGV “Bonn”
The work ranges from replacing interior cabin components to a general overhaul of the engines and optional modernisation measures for entire systems. Once the work has been completed, the EGV will first be tested on the shipyard’s almost 400-metre-long outfitting pier and then at sea. The “Bonn” will then return to service.
“We appreciate the opportunity to contribute our expertise and experience to this important Bundeswehr refit project,” said Rino Brugge, Managing Director of German Naval Yards. “Our thanks go to the Bundeswehr for their trust and cooperation. We are doing everything we can to complete the work on schedule and ensure the operational readiness of the EGV ‘Bonn’.”
Alongside the “Frankfurt am Main” and the “Berlin”, the EGV “Bonn” is the largest ship in the German Navy with a length of 174 metres and a width of 24 metres.
German Naval Yards recently installed an “integrated Marine Emergency Rescue Centre” (iMERZ) on the sister ship “Frankfurt am Main”. The same work is currently being carried out by Kiel Naval Yards on board the “Berlin”. The rescue centres make it possible to provide extended medical care on board the ships, even for long-term international missions.
