The cruise season in Rostock-Warnemünde began on Sunday with the arrival of the “Aidamar”. The port is expecting a significant upward trend this year. The use of shore power is also set to increase further.
A total of 23 shipping companies have registered their intention to call at the port this year. 36 cruise ships are expected to make a total of 167 calls, seven of them for the first time – such as the “Viking Vela” in May or the “Carnival Miracle” in June. With a length of 330 m and 145,281 GT (calls on June 4 and July 23), the American “Sky Princess” will be the largest cruise ship in Warnemünde this year.
In addition to the 253 m long “Aidamar”, which was built at the Meyer Werft and also opened the season last year, the sister ship “Aidadiva” from Rostock-based company Aida Cruises is also scheduled to moor at the port several times.
Upward trend for cruises in Rostock-Warnemünde
“After the 148 calls last year, we are delighted with the continued upward trend,” said Gernot Tesch, Managing Director of port operator Rostock Port. After Copenhagen and Kiel, the port is in a very good third place among the most-visited Baltic Sea ports.
“More than half a million national and international cruise guests will embark and disembark in Warnemünde this season,” added Managing Director Jens A. Scharner. “And after more than half of all ship calls last year were already supplied with shore power during port laytime, we are expecting a further increase in the use of shore power this year.”
