Aid organisations send goods to Odessa

The port city of Odessa was once again the target of a Russian missile attack in the middle of this month. According to the authorities, 16 people were killed.

The Hamburg action alliance “Hafenbrücke Hamburg-Odessa” has joined forces to help the people in Ukraine and mitigate the consequences of the war for them. Today, Thursday, it sent urgently needed relief supplies on their way to Odessa. The recipient is a children’s hospital in the region of the Ukrainian port city.

The Port of Hamburg and the Port of Odessa in Ukraine have a long-standing partnership – not least due to the Container Terminal Odesa (CTO), which Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG(HHLA) has been operating on the Black Sea for over 20 years.

Several partners have joined forces to form the “Port Bridge Hamburg-Odessa” alliance to support the people of Odessa and the region who have been affected by the war. Together, the initiators ” Der Hafen hilft!”, the Ukrainian Relief Corps, Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), the Humanitarian Logistics Organization (HLO), and Hafen Hamburg Marketing e.V. have called for donations in their networks.

These funds were used to procure urgently needed relief supplies, including medical consumables, food, and medical technology, requested by a children’s hospital in the Odessa region. HHLA is organising the transport of the materials from Hamburg’s Container Terminal Altenwerder to the Ukrainian port city with the help of its European logistics network, including its rail subsidiary Metrans.

“The past few weeks have once again shown us how much the civilian population in Odessa is suffering as a result of the war. We are therefore pleased to be able to make a contribution to alleviating the emergency situation. At the same time, we are impressed by the willingness to donate and by the efficiency of the network of Hamburg logistics companies. We would like to express our sincere thanks for this on behalf of all the partners involved,” says Axel Mattern, CEO of Port of Hamburg Marketing.

“Even more than two years after the war began, images of violence and destruction from Ukraine shock us daily. HHLA feels particularly connected to Ukraine through its terminal in Odessa. A big thank you, therefore, goes to everyone involved and the many dedicated employees who made this further aid delivery of urgently needed goods possible,” adds Angela Titzrath, CEO of HHLA.

Once it arrives in the port city on the Black Sea, the humanitarian coordination staff of the Odessa Military Administration will ensure the distribution of the goods.

Donations can still be made to the North German-Ukrainian Relief Staff with the reference “Port of Hamburg helps Odessa”. All necessary information is available at https://hilfe-ua.de/donate/.
