Almost two weeks after the aircraft carrier “Harry S. Truman” collided with a bulker, the US Navy is taking action.
The captain of the ship has been relieved of his duties as they have “lost confidence in his leadership qualities”.
Dave Snowdem has therefore no longer been in command of the ship stationed in the Mediterranean since Thursday. On February 12, the aircraft carrier collided with the 2003-built Supramax bulker “Besiktas-M” off Port Said at the northern end of the Suez Canal. The bulker suffered damage to the bow, while the “Harry S. Truman” was damaged in the starboard aft section.
According to the US Navy, two storage rooms and a maintenance area were affected, as was the aft deck. The ship then sailed to Souda Bay in Greece to have emergency repairs carried out. The investigation into the accident is still ongoing; it is not yet clear which of the two ships is responsible for the collision. No one was injured in the incident.
The “Harry S. Truman” has been stationed in the region since last year, when the Yemen Houthi militia began attacking merchant ships.
