ABB to supply power system for floating LNG terminal off Singapore

ABB is supplying the electrical power and propulsion system for the first floating LNG terminal in Singapore. The order comes from Hanwha Ocean and the handover to the shipping company MOL is scheduled for 2027.

ABB Marine & Ports has received an order from the South Korean shipyard Hanwha Ocean to supply the complete electrical power and propulsion system for the first floating LNG terminal in Singapore. The project marks a further step in the long-standing collaboration between the Helsinki-based technology company and the shipbuilding group from Geoje.

The facility, which is scheduled to be handed over to the owner Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL for short) in 2027, is to be stationed in the port of Jurong from 2030 and integrated into the national gas grid. The operator is Singapore LNG. The FSRU has a capacity of 200,000 m³ of LNG and will be operated by MOL under a long-term charter.

ABB supplies comprehensive system package

The integrated electrical system from ABB includes a medium-voltage generator, 6.6 kV switchgear for charging and regasification as well as a motor, transformer and drive for the propulsion. This is supplemented by a remote control and diagnostic system, a solution for condition monitoring and an extended protection system.

The new building will increase Singapore’s import capacity for LNG by 50% to around five million tons per year. Until now, the island and city state south of Malaysia has only had a land-based terminal in Jurong. The floating site is considered a strategic investment in energy infrastructure and plays a key role in the transition to a climate-neutral energy supply.

“We are proud to continue our long-standing collaboration with Hanwha Ocean,” said Rune Braastad, Global Business Line Manager Marine Systems at ABB. “This project is a further contribution to Singapore’s position as an LNG hub in Asia.”

Strong growth in demand for LNG in Asia

According to the consulting and data analysis company Wood Mackenzie, the Asia-Pacific region accounted for two thirds of global LNG demand in 2024. Hanwha Ocean is one of the leading shipyards in LNG construction, has delivered 200 LNG carriers to date and has a strong position in the FSRU segment.
