24,000-TEU newbuild for CMA CGM runs on LNG

With the “CMA CGM Seine”, the French shipping company has taken delivery of the first in a series of four new container ships.

The almost 400-meter-long freighter was built at the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (HZSY) shipyard and classified by Bureau Veritas.

According to a statement, the “CMA CGM Seine” will be equipped with modern technology and thus represent a “significant leap in performance” in shipping. The ship will play an important role for the shipping company in reducing CO2 emissions. It features a dual-fuel propulsion system supported by GTT Mark III membrane LNG bunker tanks with a total capacity of 18,600 m3, improving both environmental performance and operational efficiency.

CMA CGM expands capacity

With the delivery of the “CMA CGM Seine”, the shipping company, currently in third place in container liner shipping, is closing the gap on number 2 Maersk. If the order books are taken into account, the French company has already overtaken its competitor. CMA CGM recently ordered further newbuildings: Hyundai is to deliver twelve container ships of 18,000 TEU each, with an order value of $2.58 billion.

The newbuilding now delivered is 399.9 m long, 61.3 m wide and has a capacity of 23,876 TEU. The main engine is a WindGD model (W12X92DF-2.0) with an intelligent exhaust gas recirculation system (iCER), which should enable compliance with IMO Tier III emission standards.

“Mature use of the technology”

“Throughout the project, BV and BVS have contributed their expertise in green propulsion, smart shipping and structural safety and established a comprehensive collaboration with CMA CGM and Hudong-Zhonghua,” said Matthieu de Tugny, President of Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore. “The successful delivery of the ‘CMA CGM Seine’ marks the mature deployment of technology for ultra-large LNG dual-fuel container ships and underlines BV’s leadership in ship emission reduction, smart equipment and safety certification.”

Xavier Leclercq, Vice President of CMA Ships, said: “Today’s delivery of the ‘CMA CGM Seine’ with LNG as fuel on such a large scale will remain a milestone in shipping and underlines the CMA CGM Group’s commitment to an ambitious decarbonization path that is at the forefront of our industry.”

Mr. Xiufeng Zhang, Deputy General Manager of Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard, said: “The ‘CMA CGM Seine’ (…) is a maritime “green giant” and a new generation “super cargo carrier”. I would like to express my sincere thanks to the entire team of shipowners and BV representatives of our shipyard.”
