The Neptun Shipyard in Rostock is celebrating its 175th anniversary this year and can look back on an eventful history.
More than 1,600 ships have been built at the traditional shipyard on the Warnow since it was founded in 1850. In addition to numerous newbuildings, many other ships have also been repaired or modernized at the shipyard. With 600 employees, the Neptun Shipyard is now one of the market leaders in the construction of river cruise ships. It also builds floating engine room modules for Meyer Werft cruise ships and other customers.
The shipyard also has expertise in special ships such as ferries, gas tankers and research vessels. The company is also making intensive preparations to enter the market for the construction of converter platforms. Neptun Shipyard is an important employer in the Rostock region.
“Neptun Shipyard has been a symbol of maritime strength and technological development for 175 years,” said Meyer CEO Bernd Eikens. “Its role within the Meyer Werft Group is of central importance – not only because of its industrial expertise, but also because of its deep roots in the region. I would like to congratulate them on this special anniversary and look forward to the next steps together.”
Neptun Shipyard has been part of Meyer for almost 30 years
As part of Meyer Werft since 1997, Neptun Werft has continued to develop and invest in innovative production facilities. With the introduction of the 35-hour week in 2024, the company is also setting new standards in the industry, according to a press release.
The shipyard is currently working with partners on the construction of offshore facilities (converter platforms) and the development of climate-neutral technologies, for example through research projects on the use of fuel cells.
“175 years of Neptun Shipyards stands for innovative strength, adaptability, and the commitment of our workforce. We are proud of our history and optimistic about the future,” says Stephan Schmees, CEO of the shipyard.
The anniversary celebrations will take place in summer 2025 at the Rostock site. Guests from business, politics and society are expected to attend the ceremony on June 28, 2025; the workforce will also be invited to celebrate the shipyard’s anniversary as part of a family day on the same date.
